Department of Environmental Studies, Huxley College of the Environment at WWU
This course focuses on negotiation skills as one means of understanding environmental issues and environmental dispute resolution. The course introduces the contexts of dispute resolution in the environmental field and the methods used to structure and resolve (all) disputes. Much of the class is spent with students participating in negotiation simulations. Simulations involve role-playing and so require students to approach issues from a perspective that may be new to them. The class also involves readings about and discussions of aspects of dispute resolution. Students learn to discuss ways to handle uncertainty and conflict, practicing reframing problems to enhance opportunities for collaborative and creative solutions. Students leave the class knowing the importance of research and preparation in the negotiation process.
